20 Bible Verses About Courage and Strength (For When You're Afraid)

Scripture for the hard conversation, the diagnosis, the new job and the 3am worry — 20 verses about courage and strength, with what each one actually promises.

Courage in the Bible is almost never a personality trait. It's a response to a promise. Again and again, "be strong and courageous" comes attached to a reason — and the reason is always that God is present.

Here are 20 verses to carry into whatever is in front of you. Quotations are from the ESV.

When you're facing something new

  1. Joshua 1:9 — "Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." Spoken to a man stepping into a role he didn't feel ready for.
  2. Deuteronomy 31:6 — "Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you."
  3. 1 Chronicles 28:20 — "Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the LORD God, even my God, is with you." Note the middle: and do it. Courage is a verb.
  4. Isaiah 41:10 — "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

When fear is loud

  1. Psalm 27:1 — "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
  2. Psalm 56:3 — "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." Not if. When.
  3. 2 Timothy 1:7 — "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."
  4. 1 John 4:18 — "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear."
  5. John 16:33 — "In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." Jesus doesn't promise an easy road. He promises He's already won.

When you feel weak

  1. Isaiah 40:29 — "He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength."
  2. 2 Corinthians 12:9 — "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Weakness isn't a disqualification. It's where His power shows up most clearly.
  3. Philippians 4:13 — "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Paul wrote it about contentment in hunger and plenty — not about winning games. It's even better in context.
  4. Psalm 46:1 — "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
  5. Ephesians 6:10 — "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might." Strength in the Lord — borrowed, not generated.

When you need to stand firm

  1. 1 Corinthians 16:13 — "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong."
  2. Psalm 18:2 — "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge."
  3. Romans 8:31 — "If God is for us, who can be against us?"
  4. Hebrews 13:6 — "So we can confidently say, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?'"

When you need boldness to speak

  1. Proverbs 28:1 — "The righteous are bold as a lion."
  2. Acts 4:13 — When the leaders "saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus." Boldness came from proximity to Jesus, not from training. (If sharing your faith is where you need courage, read how to share your faith without being weird about it.)

How to actually use these

  • Pick one for this week and memorise it. Fear tends to strike when you can't look anything up.
  • Pray it back. "Lord, You said You're with me wherever I go. I'm going into this meeting. Be with me there."
  • Say it before, not after. Courage verses work best on the way in.
  • Tell someone. Ask a friend to pray the verse over you by name. "Two are better than one" (Ecclesiastes 4:9).

Courage is one of the four weeks of the free 30-Day Seek First Challenge — a short scripture and one small action a day. And if your fear is about the future, what Matthew 6:33 actually means was written for exactly that.

Seek first. Stay ready.

Quick answers

What is the best Bible verse about courage?

Joshua 1:9 is the most quoted: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." Its courage rests on God's presence, not on feeling brave.

What Bible verse says God gives us strength?

Isaiah 40:29 — "He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength" — and Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Both describe strength received from God, not produced on our own.

Does the Bible say not to be afraid?

Often — but usually as a promise of presence rather than a scolding. Isaiah 41:10 is typical: "Fear not, for I am with you." The reason not to fear is always who is with you.
