What 'Seek First the Kingdom' Actually Costs

Matthew 6:33 is quoted on coffee mugs and t-shirts. Lived out on a Monday morning, it's far more demanding — and far better.

"Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

It's one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. It's also one of the least obeyed — not because we disagree with it, but because we've softened it into a slogan.

Read what comes before it

Matthew 6:33 doesn't appear in a vacuum. Jesus has just spent an entire paragraph on anxiety: what you'll eat, what you'll drink, what you'll wear. He points at birds. He points at flowers. He names the thing we're all quietly doing — trying to secure our own lives.

Then He says: seek first.

Not seek also. Not seek when convenient. First.

"First" is a math word

Here's what makes it costly. If something is first, everything else is not first.

Your comfort. Your career trajectory. Your weekend. Your reputation. Your plan for how life was supposed to go. None of those become evil — they become second.

That reordering is the whole Christian life, and it doesn't happen once. You do it again every morning, usually before anyone else is awake to see it.

What it looks like in practice

  • Choosing prayer before the phone. (The first five minutes of your day usually predict the rest of it.)
  • Giving when the math is uncomfortable.
  • Serving somewhere that will never appear on a résumé.
  • Telling the truth when a lie would be easier and cheaper.
  • Going on the outreach when you're tired.

None of that is dramatic. All of it is costly. That's exactly why it forms you.

The promise attached to the cost

Don't miss the second half: "and all these things will be added to you."

Jesus isn't asking you to give up your life and get nothing. He's saying the things you're anxiously chasing are downstream of the thing you should be seeking. Put the Kingdom first, and the rest gets handled by a Father who already knows what you need.

That's not a prosperity promise. It's a peace promise.

Where to take it next

If this is stirring something in you, the Seek First: World movement exists to make this more than a personal conviction — it's a global call to reorder our lives around the Kingdom together.

And if you're at the very beginning — if you'd say you're not even sure you're a Christian yet — start at I AM REBORN. It's built for exactly that moment.

One question for this week

What would you have to put second in order to genuinely put God first?

Name it. Then act on it once. That's how it starts.

Seek first. Stay ready.
